Learn How to Learn

Healthcare providers are lifelong learners β€” continuous learning is a professional requirement, not a personal choice. These six methods are backed by cognitive science and used in medical education programs worldwide.

Leitner System

Organize flashcards by how well you know each concept. Review difficult ones daily, easy ones weekly. The system forces you to spend time where you have actual gaps β€” not where you feel comfortable.

Research basis: Spaced repetition exploits the "spacing effect" (Ebbinghaus, 1885) β€” information reviewed at increasing intervals is retained exponentially longer than information crammed. Medical students using spaced repetition score 25% higher on licensing exams.

SQ3R Method

Survey β†’ Question β†’ Read β†’ Recite β†’ Review. Skim structure first. Create questions from headings. Read to find answers. Summarize from memory. Return to check.

Dual Coding

Combine words with visuals β€” diagrams, mind maps, annotated illustrations. Information encoded in two formats (verbal + visual) is recalled more easily than information encoded one way.

Research basis: Paivio's Dual Coding Theory (1971) demonstrated that verbal and visual memory systems are independent β€” activating both simultaneously dramatically increases retention and recall speed.

Method of Loci

Visualize a familiar route. Place pieces of information at specific landmarks. Recall by mentally walking the route. Works for lists, sequences, physiological processes.

Research basis: Memory champions use this technique universally. It works because the hippocampus β€” your spatial memory system β€” is one of the brain's most powerful storage mechanisms. You hijack navigation memory to carry other information.

Feynman Technique

Explain any concept as if teaching someone with no background. Find every gap in your explanation β€” those gaps are gaps in your understanding. Fill them. Repeat until the explanation is complete and simple.

Research basis: The "generation effect" (Slamecka & Graf, 1978) shows that information you generate yourself is remembered far better than information you receive. If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough to use it clinically.
Healthcare parallel: Pennebaker's expressive writing research (1997) showed that structured written reflection β€” just 15–20 minutes β€” measurably improved immune function and reduced physician burnout. Reflection isn't soft skill work: it's a clinical resilience practice.
